CUG Calls for Application of National Natural Science Fund for Excellent Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas)

Overview of CUG

Situated at the foot of the Nanwang Mountain and on the bank of East Lake, China University of Geosciences is a key national university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education with a graduate school being established with the approval of the state. It is also listed in “Project 211” and “Double First-Class” universities.

Focusing on the frontier of academic disciplines and the needs of economic and social development, the university has built an academic ecosystem in which multiple disciplines develop coordinately with earth sciences as the leading one. At present, the university boasts two national first-level key disciplines and 16 Hubei provincial key disciplines. Two first-level disciplines, “geology” and “geological resources and geological engineering”, rank first respectively in every national discipline assessment. The university has 23 colleges (institutes), 67 undergraduate programs, 34 first-level discipline master programs, 16 first-level discipline doctoral programs and 15 postdoctoral research stations. The university confers 10 professional master's degrees including MBA, MPA and Master of Engineering which covers 14 engineering fields.

The university boasts more than 3225 staff members, including over 1876 teachers. The faculty includes 11 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 424 Ph.D. supervisors, 520 professors and 927 associate professors. There are 86 research institutions, laboratories, and research institutes/centers, including 2 state key laboratories, 1 state research center for engineering technology, 1 international cooperation base of science and technology for geological engineering and 1 demonstration base for training innovative talents respectively supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The university has a perfect experimental and practical teaching system, including 3 state demonstration centers for experimental teaching and 1 state experimental teaching center for virtual simulation.

The university offers the fields of study covering mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, atmospheric science, marine science, geophysics, geology, biology, mechanical engineering, materials science and engineering, information and communication, control science and engineering, computer science and technology, civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, science and technology of surveying and mapping, geological resources and geological engineering, petroleum and natural gas engineering, environmental science and engineering, software engineering, safety science and engineering, management science and engineering, applied economics, law, Marxist theory, education, psychology, sports science, foreign languages and literature, journalism and communication, business administration, public administration, design science, etc.

Brief Introduction of the Fund

In order to attract overseas outstanding young talents to work in China, National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC)  sets up National Natural Science Fund for Excellent Young Scientists Fund Program (Overseas) since 2021. The fund encourages overseas outstanding young talents (including non-Chinese foreign talents) in science, engineering and relevant fields to choose research direction independently to carry out innovative research.

How to Apply

Applicants should directly apply for the Fund from NSFC through CUG in China.

Eligibility

Ø Applications should meet the following qualifications:

Ø Abide by the laws and regulations of China, have good scientific ethics and spirit of scientists;

Ø A doctoral degree; born after September 1, 1980; carry out research in science, engineering and relevant fields;

Ø Hold a formal teaching or research position at a famous overseas university or a scientific research institution or at the R&D department of a renowned enterprise by April 30, 2021 and should have 3 or more consecutive years of overseas research experience;

Ø The requirement of service year overseas can be waived, if you have obtained a doctoral degree overseas with outstanding performance;

Ø Stand out among your peers and having the potential to become an academic or technological leader in the discipline;

Ø Preferably not hold a full-time job in China; if you are already working in China, you must have returned China after September 1, 2019;

Ø If you are supported by the fund, you must resign from overseas work or have no work abroad and return to China full-time to work for at least 3 years.

Benefits

Ø Remuneration: an annual salary over 500,000 RMB. Teaching allowance, research performance bonus and bonus for high-level research achievements if you obtain excellent performance at the end of an appointment term.

Ø Title: a direct appointment of professor and doctoral supervisor.

Ø Supervision: be eligible to supervise 1-2 doctoral students and 2-3 master students each year and to recruit 3 post-doctors with an annual salary of 200,000 RMB each.

Ø Funding: a research start-up fund up to 4-6 million RMB (1-3 million RMB offered by the state and 3 million RMB offered by the university).

Ø Living allowance: no less than 2 million RMB for living allowance .

Ø Housing: transitional housing on campus; being eligible to purchase residential commercial housing for teachers.

Ø Others: access to educational resources for children, such as CUG affiliated Kindergarten, primary school and junior high school; access to  medical services of Grade-A tertiary hospitals or above.

Proposal Submission

Ø Proposals should be submitted via the Internet-based Science Information System  by April 30, 2021 (due by 17:00 Beijing time). Applicants should complete the proposal forms following the online instructions and outlines for the Fund.

Ø After online submission, applicants should print and sign a PDF version of the final application form and submit it in time to NSFC through CUG along with the supplementary documents.
